Ken Annakin’s The Hellions (1961), a British Western set and shot in South Africa, is screening at the BFI in London on 11 May 2017.
The film stars Richard Todd, Lionel Jeffries, Marty Wilde, Al Mulock and Ronald Fraser. The screening will be introduced by Vic Pratt. Further information can be found here.
The Hellions features a narrative that shares some common themes with Fred Zinnemann’s High Noon (USA, 1952). Here the villainous Luke Billings (Lionel Jeffries) is intent on settling an old score with a local lawman, Sam Hargis (Richard Todd).
Ivo Ritzer duscusses The Hellions in a chapter dedicated to South African Westerns – ‘Gunfight at the Transvaal Highveld: Locating the Boerewors Western in Southern Africa’ – which appears in Lee Broughton’s edited collection Critical Perspectives on the Western: From A Fistful of Dollars to Django Unchained (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016).
