True Grit

In collaboration with Screen Seven (Leeds), Lee Broughton concluded a screening of True Grit (the Coen Brothers, USA, 2010) with a public paper titled ‘True Grit? Charting the representation of female characters in classical Hollywood Westerns’. The paper offered an overview of the repressive narrative patterns and prescriptive representational strategies that the makers of Hollywood Westerns routinely employed in order to counteract and control the unruly onscreen behaviour of their strong female characters. The films discussed included Duel in the Sun (King Vidor, USA, 1946), Johnny Guitar (Nicholas Ray, USA, 1954) and True Grit (Henry Hathaway, USA, 1969).
